THE DIVERSITY OF LIFE Diversity is life. And life is diversity, on all levels, from genetics all the way to the entire terrestrial system. Diversity is an essential factor for the survival of species, including humankind, and ensures the capacity to react to environmental difficulty. Diversity in life is the variable that leads to the greatest success stories because it implies higher flexibility, creativity and resistance. The secret of evolution is that each living being is born unique and different from the others. However, for mostly cultural and historical reasons, only some individuals are labelled as “different”, because they do not belong to the social standards of a certain period. This theme places attention on the diversity of life in the world and on the experiences of those who face and live with their diversity on a daily basis. Only recently has science started studying homosexuality in nature. From the smallest insects to giant marine mammals, there are many species in the animal kingdom where relations have been observed between members of the same sex. The instinct to copulate, the drive to reproduce is not only dictated by the biological need found in genes: to tell the truth, in nature there can be homosexual relationships that last a lifetime. For the first time ever, the Museum of Natural History in Oslo brings to Italy a selection of studies and photographs of over 1500 species in which sexual attitudes between members of the same sex have been analysed. Yet for many people with disabilities day to day life is burdened with insurmountable barriers, often raised by society itself. All you have to do is change your perspective to understand your limits and to discover the unexpected resources you possess inside. In this workshop it is possible to experience first hand the feelings and difficulties the disabled have in carrying out certain day to day actions such as pouring a glass a water or folding up a piece of paper. Discover and practice new skills, not only to raise awareness, but also to understand yourself better and understand that independence above-all means being able to do even the easiest actions on your own. The book of diversity – S – Workshop The nice little pink worm is having trouble with a new roommate Target: 3 – 6 Offered by: Tecnoscienza.it – ZeroSei Hey kids, Bebo the Worm is back! This year the feisty inhabitant of the “Book of Diversity” now has an unexpected roommate: Bice the Flea. The two don’t get along very well…they are so different from each other! Bebo the Worm is red and slithers, Bice the Flea is blue and jumps. They really can’t stand each other and they take advantage of every little difference to make fun of each other and challenge each other to hard contests. Will they ever get along? After last year’s success of the “Book of Curiosities”, a new example of educational fun applied to science is presented. The big wooden book is home to two funny characters, Bebo and Bice, and is a stage to tell their stories. Through experiments they make during the story, children are helped to reason on scientific issues using inductive methodology to leave room for curiosity and imagination. Magisterial lesson and international dialogues Life in all of its forms: Kenneth Timmis will speak about microorganisms capable of surviving in extreme conditions, but also of the existence of habitable planets outside the Solar System, a theme which will also be looked at by the astrophysicist Giovanna Tinetti. Life damaged by viruses and illnesses: aviary flu studied by Ilaria Capua and cancer, Devra Davis’ field of investigation, are just some of the examples which we have to learn to get to know better. Silvio Garattini will participate in a conversation on lateral amyotrophic sclerosis and Elena Cattaneo will present the latest results on stem-cell research. Climate emergencies which put human life in danger will be looked at by Gabrielle Walker and Nigel Tapper, while the more human aspect will be examined by the geneticist Luciano Terrenato and and by Luigi Luca Cavalli Sforza, who will teach the opening Magisterial lesson.
